For a game marketing itself as a "3D platformer" I cannot say it does its job particularly well. I understand this is a solo project so I'll give my feedback with that in mind.
* Gameplay *
It isn't all that fun, not particularly engaging. It is more akin to a Sonic the Hedgehog game with the coins and the power-ups, but worse.
The gimmick of this game is having an odd "Stealth" mechanic where you "hide" by being still and holding a button. Where the game wants to shine in fast movement and jumping, it constantly prevents you from doing so. A reason for this is, for some reason, is having to completely stop when picking up items. Why can't I just pick it up just like the coins? They're in the same line path as the coins. You would constantly be running then stopping. The main reason however, are the cops, which are the obstacles in this game-they are more like annoyances than actual things to go around or overcome. You cant really maneuver around them because the spaces are too small to run past them, they run faster than you so you can never really escape them. The more annoying aspect to them is that if they even catch a pixel of you, they instantly get alarmed and go towards you even if you're not doing anything...like shoplifting. You're just getting arrested because why not.
You're supposed to be this speedy shoplifter who can easily pick money and items off the ground (because I guess the store just has money lying on floor instead of cash registers?) but you're prevented from being fast due to having to STOP frequently.
"This is a game of speed or strategy... or platforming". Why can't it be all 3 at the same time?
"Run your way through the 3D platformer full of Pac Man like chase sequences"
If you want them to chase me, then have me keep running. Let me be faster than them, give me a space where I can be chased, pick up items, run and jump like the game wants to me to do instead of stopping and waiting for my coffee to finish.
* Visuals *
Very saturated looking game with a VHS effect that you can't turn off. The brightness is off the charts in some areas. My eyes hurts look at it for too long.
* Audio *
There's no customers in the store because it only plays 1 song and its very monotonous and mellow. Not very indicative of how you want to play the game unless you like taking it at a slow pace.
Thanks for the thoughtful and constructive critique!
I can’t address all the points, but I definitely agree on some things.
Visuals: More careful direction will need to be taken in terms of exposure maximum/minimums
Audio: Definitely have better tracks later, but will be revamping 1st level music. (Hope those have more bounce)
Gameplay: You can sprint faster than the cops (Left Shift) by a value of 2x but it does take some time to ramp up. The first level does not explain that well enough. (Later levels have spaces which are more spacious to outmaneuver).
There is a clear difficulty I had in marrying the ideas of speed, strategy, stealth and the thematic consistency of the environment/story; which you nailed with your feedback.
regardless, appreciate your commitment to being real with game devs early in their journey!
Smooth and speedy platforming + dank tunes
...I spent way more time playing this than expected
Fun platforming in a nostalgic setting that reminds you of hanging out at the mall in the 2000's
It's so satisfying getting away from the cops using mannequin mode and the soda pops that let you jump extra high
Good music and loved finding secret rooms/passageways for more things to shoplift!
Wow. Appreciate the lengthy review!! Hope to crank out more in this project!!
Came for the shopping but stayed for the lifting. Cool art style and music too.
Thanks Fam!
